The brush tool is the main tool for digital artists and designers. It seems like a very easy tool to use, but it takes time to learn how to get the most out of your brushes.
In Photoshop, make a new file. (File > New.) Then open the Brushes Palette. (Window > Brushes).
Select the Brush Tool in the Toolbox. (Shortcut: Press “B” on your keyboard.) Select a round brush from the Brushes Presets Palette.
| In the Brushes Palette, set the Spacing to 1%. (The Spacing option is in the Brush Tip Shape section.)
Draw a line, you’ll see that the width is equal along the entire length.
Adjust the number in the spacing to anything over 100%. When you draw a line, it will be dotted.
Select the Shape Dynamics section. Make the Minimum Diameter 30%. Your line will show circles that are both big and small.
In the Scattering section, play around with the settings. I’ve made the Scatter 300% and I’ve turned the Control for Scatter to “Off”.
In the Transfer section, experiment with the settings and see what works best for you. In this case, I’ve turned the Opacity Jitter to 100%.
Here are examples of what you can do with these brushes: you can colour images with them, use them for colourful effects on photographs, or as graphic interpretations in and of themselves.
